Strawberries and Cream Shake (Vegan Gluten-Free)

A thick and creamy strawberry vanilla milkshake made with only 4 ingredients. This shake is vegan, gluten-free, packed with fresh fruits and makes a delicious change to your morning smoothie or dessert shake.

I love a good smoothie and when summer comes round, there is nothing quite like a refreshing drink. But, sometimes my smoothies get a bit too thick and end up being smoothie bowls so this time round I wanted to make my smoothie a bit more like a milkshake. And I think I hit the spot.

Have I convinced you yet? If you’re looking for the recipe, skip forward a bit, but let’s have a look at what goes into this creamy-dreamy shake.

  • Frozen strawberries: these are much cheaper and easier to buy frozen or you can buy them fresh, chop off the stalk and freeze yourself. It’s important they are frozen to keep the Strawberries and Cream Shake nice and thick.
  • Banana: as the strawberries are frozen, you can use a regular banana but if you have one frozen, you can use that, too. The riper the better when it comes to bananas as they are naturally sweeter the darker, they are.
  • Vanilla oat milk: I first made this shake with the best vanilla oat drink, and I have been loving it ever since. It’s great in coffees, cereals, porridge bowls and so much more and is the inspiration behind this milkshake. If you are using other plant-based milk, add a dash of vanilla essence.
  • Plant-based yoghurt: the thicker the better when it comes to yoghurt. I like coconut or Greek-style oat yoghurt here for the best texture and flavour, but you can use whatever you have.

There is only one step needed to make this delicious and fruity Strawberries and Cream Shake and that is to pop all the ingredients into a blender and blend until really smooth and creamy. Add more plant-based milk if you like it a bit thinner and then serve in glasses and enjoy.

If you want to make your glasses look a bit fancier, spread some yoghurt on the inside of the glasses before pouring in the fresh Strawberries and Cream Shake. Then top with some extra yoghurt (thick yoghurt will be best here) and some fresh strawberries and crushed pistachios, desiccated coconut and cacao nibs. The toppings are totally optional but I think they make this milkshake way more fun.

That’s all there is to this pretty-in-pink Strawberries and Cream Shake. It’s perfect for an on-the-go snack or as part of a balanced breakfast (maybe alongside some Tempeh Brunch Toast) or as an afternoon snack. It’s packed with fruits, protein (Greek-style yoghurt is high in protein, for example) and fibre (from the fruit). It is light and refreshing but will also keep you going a little. If you did want to jazz this Strawberries and Cream Shake up a bit:

  • Make it a dessert: add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the mix.
  • Make it a show-stopper: swirl on some whipped cream.
  • Make it more filling: add 50g oats in the blender.
  • Make it a protein shake: add 1-2 scoops of your favourite vegan vanilla protein.

I almost feel “bad” for calling this shake a recipe, as it’s so simple but often, simple is best. We all need those shakes and smoothies that we can keep coming back to and that make us feel good – inside and out. This Strawberries and Cream Shake is one of those drinks.
