Ferrero Rocher Cake Balls (Vegan GF)

Double chocolate cake balls with chocolate hazelnut spread filled with a whole hazelnut all coated in a thick chocolate shell, crushed hazelnuts and more chocolate. These cake balls are no-bake, naturally vegan, gluten-free and only need 4 ingredients.

Cake balls or pops are such a fun thing to make and at the moment, I have so many vanilla cakes lying around as I am recipe testing for a wedding cake. The cake needs to be vegan and gluten-free and I am testing out a few ratios to see the difference and while most have been OK, there have been lots that aren’t good enough. What to do with these cakes? Crumble them up and make cake balls (or freeze your cake crumbs until you’re ready to make these cake balls).

These Ferrero Rocher Cake Balls are the dream. They are:

  • Chocolatey and rich
  • Just like a Ferrero Rocher truffle made from cake
  • Only need 4 ingredients
  • Naturally vegan and gluten-free
  • Easy to make in a few steps
  • Nutty and sweet
  • Great for little ones (and adults too)

Like my Banana Bread Birthday Cake Poprs, Chocolate Gingerbread Cake Bombs and Vegan Oreo Cake Balls, the main ingredient is leftover cake. Next time you make a cake, make some extra to use up for these Ferrero Rocher Cake Balls. Or, next time you are experimenting with cake and it isn’t quite perfect, allow it to cool down and crumble it up for cake balls. 

Let’s see what else goes into these chocolate balls:

  • Leftover cake: the cake I used for this recipe is similar to my Vegan Gluten-free Vanilla Sheet CakeVegan Gluten-free Vanilla Sheetcake which is naturally vegan and gluten-free (as in the name) and works so well as it’s subtle enough but has a great texture. Any vanilla cake will work, or for even more chocolate goodness, try my Vegan Black Forest Gateau sponge. Weigh out the cake crumbs so you have 250g.
  • Vegan Nutella spread: or dairy-free chocolate spread. There are quite a few in the supermarkets now, or you can make your own (I have a recipe pending for this).
  • Hazelnuts: for this recipe, you need whole hazelnuts to go in the middle of the Ferrero Rocher Cake Balls (classic for Ferrero Rocher truffles) and then chopped or crushed hazelnuts for coating the chocolate balls.
  • Chocolate: any dairy-free chocolate will work here, and I like a dark chocolate for the best flavour.

As you can see, these Ferrero Rocher Cake Balls only need a few simple ingredients, and they taste amazing. They are so rich and moreish and easy to eat a few in one sitting, plus I love that they use up leftover cake.

How to store these Ferrero Rocher Cake Balls?

These are best stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 1 week or in the freezer for 1 month. I like to rest them at room temperature for 20 minutes before eating them so the chocolate melts even more.

Can I make these nut-free?

While Ferrero Rocher are typically made with hazelnuts, you can make these with any other nuts or with seeds, too. Simply use larger seeds inside the cake balls and then coat them in other chopped seeds or even with cacao nibs for a delicious chocolatey crunch.

Double chocolate cake balls with chocolate hazelnut spread filled with a whole hazelnut all coated in a thick chocolate shell, crushed hazelnuts and more chocolate. These cake balls are no-bake, naturally vegan, gluten-free and only need 4 ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 250g leftover vanilla cake
  • 100g vegan Nutella/chocolate spread
  • 14 whole hazelnuts
  • 200g – 300g dairy-free chocolate
  • 100g hazelnuts, chopped
  • Flaky salt

Directions

  1. Make sure the cake is cool and crumble to a fine crumb with your fingers.
  2. Slightly warm the chocolate spread so it’s runnier and add in the cake crumbs. Mix to a sticky dough. Add more Nutella as needed.
  3. Divide the dough into 14 pieces and flatten them slightly. Place 1 whole hazelnut in the middle of each piece and roll the dough around it to make a cake ball. Continue to make all 14 cake balls. Place on a lined tray and chill for 30 minutes.
  4. Melt the chocolate – use 200g if you are single coating the balls or 300g chocolate if you are double coating the cake balls.
  5. Place the chopped hazelnuts in a shallow bowl.
  6. Cover each cake ball in the chocolate and roll into the hazelnuts to cover entirely. Place back on the lined tray and chill in the freezer for 10 minutes.
  7. If you are double coating the balls, once set, cover in chocolate again and return to the freezer straight away.
  8. Sprinkle with flaky salt and enjoy. Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week in the fridge or up to 1 month in the freezer.
