What goes into these Halloween Chocolate Dirt Pots?

The base for these mousse pots relies on a simple but impressive chocolate mousse recipe:

  • Silken tofu: this is the magical ingredient. It’s so silky smooth, soft and tender and becomes the creamiest chocolate mousse. It must be silken soft tofu rather than firm or extra firm tofu as the textures are different.
  • Dark chocolate: as these pots are topped with sweets and cookies, I like to stick to dark chocolate for a more intense chocolate flavour but you can use dairy-free milk chocolate, too. You can use flavoured chocolate like mint, hazelnut or salted caramel for a twist, too.
  • Plant-based milk: this thins the consistency slightly to create the best mousse-like pudding. You can use any milk like oat, soya, almond or coconut.

Simply blend together all the base ingredients and pour into 3 glass jars or pots for these help-yourself desserts.

As for the other ingredients:

  • Wiggly worm sweets: or other Halloween shaped sweets. Make sure they are gelatine-free.
  • Crushed cookies: I think chocolate cookies or chocolate and cream sandwich cookies work best as they are rich in colour and texture but any cookie will work. Make sure they are vegan and gluten-free where needed. If you want to make your own, I’d try them with my Dark Chocolate Vegan Brownie Cookies.
  • Extra chocolate: I like to add melted chocolate into the glasses to create a lovely chocolate swirl inside. You can add some extra chocolate on top of the mousse pots, too.
  • Googly eyes: I love adding edible sugar eyes onto my creations to really bring them to life, but this is optional.

How do I make these pots?

They are so simple to make!

  • Chill 3 glasses in the fridge: this helps the melted chocolate to swirl inside them stick more easily and quickly to create the best shapes.
  • Blend together the filling ingredients: the melted chocolate, tofu and plant-based milk.
  • Pour the mousse into the pots: allow to chill for a little bit.
  • Top with crushed cookies: and add on the chocolate and edible eyes.
  • Decorate with Halloween sweets: like sour worms.

Are these desserts gluten-free and nut-free?

Yes, these are gluten-free and nut-free, just make sure the chocolate and plant-based milk are not nut-based or contain non gluten-free ingredients, too.

Where can I find vegan sweets to decorate?

There are so many vegan sweet companies now so its’s fairly easy to find gelatine-free sweets. These sour worms are from Biona Organic and I also love Vegan All Sorts.

Can I make more than 3 pots?

These jars are fairly big so if you are making these Halloween Chocolate Dirt Pots for children, you can easily half each pot to make 6 desserts. Or simply, double or triple the recipe below as required, to make more.

How long will these Halloween Chocolate Dirt Pots last?

Anything chocolatey is gone within the day in my house, but this mousse is a great recipe and lasts for 2-3 days in the fridge. I’d suggest to decorate the pots just before serving as once left in the fridge, the sweets tend to go slimy.
