Vegan Chocolate Orange Mousse (Gluten-Free)

A rich, thick and creamy Vegan Chocolate Orange Mousse packed with protein and good-for-you ingredients. This recipe comes together in 10 minutes and is great dessert.

I love a good chocolate mousse and I went through such a phase of making them a few years ago. Since then, I’ve been a bit quiet on the chocolate mousse front, notwithstanding Chocolate Hummus (which is amazing) and all of the other chocolate desserts that I seem to make. Chocolate just makes me happy! And being able to share it with other also makes me very happy, which is exactly how I like to serve this mousse: as part of a dessert board for sharing.

What ingredients do I need?

The mousse is a mix of:

  • Dark chocolate: I use the refined sugar free and delicious dark chocolate from HU Kitchen but any chocolate will work. The richer, darker the chocolate is best for me, but if you like it sweeter then use a dairy-free milk chocolate. You can save 20% on HU Chocolate with code AMY for the UK and NOURISHINGAMY for USA.
  • Silken tofu: this is the key ingredient that means this dessert is high in protein, low in fat and super creamy and silky smooth. You cannot swap this for firm tofu.
  • Banana: the riper the better as it is sweeter and blends more easily into the mousse. You can skip this if you don’t like banana and add 2-3 tbsp of syrup like maple, agave or vegan honey if you prefer.
  • Cocoa powder: all chocolates vary slightly and I found I often like to make the mousse a little richer and thicker by adding cocoa or cacao powder. But you can leave this out and it’s still great.
  • Orange zest: this adds the delicious orange flavour to the mousse. If you want to make plain chocolate mousse you can omit this.
  • Vanilla essence: for flavour.
  • Salt: to enhance the chocolate.

How do I make this mousse dessert?

The method is very simple:

  • Melt the chocolate: and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
  • Add all of the ingredients to a blender: and process till smooth.
  • Enjoy straight away or allow to chill: for 1-2 hours in the fridge. It will thicken as it chills so you can also make this ahead of time.

How can I serve this Vegan Chocolate Orange Mousse?

I like to eat this mousse a few ways:

  • In a jar with a spoon: add some berries to the bottom of a glass and top with the mousse. Add on some cookies and extra berries and eat straight away or keep like this in the fridge to firm up.
  • On a dessert board: pour the chocolate mousse into small pots and arrange on a board or platter with some fresh fruits and cookies. Pictured here is a bowl of coconut yoghurt, fresh berries, grapes, my Homemade Oreo Cookies and some new Blueberry White Chocolate Cookies (coming soon).
  • In a bowl with a spoon: nothing fancy but still delicious.
  • With other fruits: you can add apple slices, oranges, bananas and pears are all delicious with this Vegan Chocolate Orange Mousse.
  • As a cake frosting: you can spread this over a cake and it’s a delicious thick and creamy frosting. Note that it won’t pipe very well but it is good for spreading on top. Try it on top of my Double Chocolate Fig Loaf Cake.

Is this dessert gluten-free and nut-free?

Yes this Vegan Chocolate Orange Mousse is free of nuts (check your chocolate) and contains no grains or gluten. Make sure that you serve your dessert with nut-free and gluten-free snacks where needed.

How long will this last?

Not long! This mousse is so moreish, light and delicious that it disappears very quickly. It makes 4 smaller portions or 2 large ones, and can be kept in a sealed jar or container for 2-3 days in the fridge.
