Vanilla Hemp Oat Milk and Cinnamon Hemp Porridge

A thick and creamy homemade hemp and oat milk made without additives or sugar, and without the need for straining. This milk is perfect for coffees and in breakfast bowls like this Cinnamon and Hemp Porridge or for drinking straight from the bottle.

Despite being ridiculously easy, homemade plant-based milk has a bit of a reputation for being difficult, expensive and time-consuming. This recipe is set to change that common belief! I first made this milk at the weekend, after experimenting a lot with homemade milk last year and this is my new favourite by far. Inspired by a friend’s story on Instagram sharing her love for homemade hemp milk, I was inspired to get creative.

This Vanilla Hemp Oat Milk takes about 5 mins to make, plus an overnight soak – which isn’t entirely necessary, but it really adds to the smoothness and creaminess of the milk. Add hemp hearts – also called hulled hemp seeds – and oats to a jar, cover in filtered water and leave to soak overnight. In the morning, drain the mixture and rinse it thoroughly before adding to a blender with more filtered water, a pinch of salt to help naturally preserve the milk and a dash of vanilla for flavour.

Then blend away. And blend a bit more than you think to really get the best texture. I don’t strain mine as I find the texture perfect as it is, but you can strain it if your blender isn’t quite as powerful. Store the milk in a glass jar in the fridge – best served cold and consumed within 2-3 days.

The uses of this Vanilla Hemp Oat Milk are endless… I have really enjoyed drinking small glasses of this milk throughout the day or warmed up with some cacao powder in a hot chocolate (try this one for Cashew and Vanilla Hot Chocolate), in coffees and in breakfast bowls.

This Cinnamon and Hemp Porridge is just one porridge recipe that you can use the milk in – but you can use it in any number of oat combinations. This particular bowl has some added grated courgette, chia seeds and then cinnamon and ginger for a warming flavour. Serve your bowl with your favourite toppings, I went for coconut yoghurt, berries, more hemp hearts, some chocolate, syrup and peanut butter.
