Double Chocolate Fruit and Nut Swirl Rolls (Vegan)

Light and fluffy 25-minute double chocolate swirl rolls with a cacao infused dough, chocolate spread filling and lots of dried fruits and nuts. This small batch of buns is quick and easy to make and naturally vegan.

I love buns, rolls, breads… all that kind of thing, especially when you can make them more quickly and more easily without yeast. After my latest obsession with my Quick Protein Cinnamon Rolls for 2, I am back with another no-yeast and simple swirl bun recipe: Double Chocolate Fruit and Nut Swirl Rolls. These have a similar recipe to before and the method is the same, so if you tried the cinnamon rolls, I’m sure you’ll love this chocolate version.

Here’s what we need:

  • Self-raising flour: this adds the fluffiness and rise that usually comes from the yeast in breads and buns.
  • Cacao powder: to make the dough chocolate flavoured. You can also use cocao powder, make sure it is sugar-free if you prefer.
  • Thick vegan yoghurt: this is the magic binder that makes these swirl rolls so fluffy and delicate yet sturdy and fluffy.
  • Chocolate spread: make sure you use a dairy-free one and there are lots around in the shops now. Warm the spread up a little so it’s easier to spread otherwise the dough could tear.
  • Dried fruits and nuts: I used a blend of dried blueberries, gojis and almonds but any will do. Chop them small so they roll up neatly.
  • Vegan butter or margarine: just a little to brush over the outside to keep it moist with a slightly crispy edge.

And that is it! Make the dough using the first 3 ingredients, roll out to an oblong, spread with the chocolate spread, sprinkle over the dried fruits and nuts and roll up to a tight roll. Slice in half and bake in greased muffin holes for 16 minutes until fluffy.

Enjoy these Double Chocolate Fruit and Nut Swirl Rolls straight from the oven warm with more chocolate spread and a dusting of icing sugar or have them cold later on, either way they are delicious. Like my other buns and rolls, they are best eaten the same day and you can re-heat them in the oven, too.

I hope you will love these rich, indulgent yet so easy and fluffy no-yeast, small-batch and fuss-free Double Chocolate Fruit and Nut Swirl Rolls. They are quick to come together and are a firm favourite at home. They’re great when you just fancy one or two buns rather than a whole batch.

Light and fluffy 25-minute double chocolate swirl rolls with a cacao infused dough, chocolate spread filling and lots of dried fruits and nuts. This small batch of buns is quick and easy to make and naturally vegan.

Ingredients

  • 100g self-raising flour
  • 1 tbsp cacao powder
  • 100g thick plant-based yoghurt
  • 35g chocolate spread
  • 40g dried fruit mix, chopped
  • Melted butter/margarine
  • To serve: extra chocolate spread, extra dried fruits and nuts, icing sugar

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 160Fan/180*C and grease 2 muffins holes with vegan butter/margarine.
  2. Warm the chocolate spread so it’s smoother and runnier.
  3. Stir together the flour and cacao powder and now add in the yoghurt. Bring to a dough and tip onto a lightly floured surface. Bring the dough together with your hands and roll out to an oblong about 12cm x 30cm.
  4. Spread the top evenly with the chocolate spread and sprinkle over the dried fruits and nuts mix. Using the short end, roll the dough up tightly to form a swirl roll. Press down to seal the edge and slice in half.
  5. Place each swirl roll into a greased muffin hole, brush with extra melted butter/margarine and bake for 16 minutes until fluffy.
  6. Serve with extra chocolate spread (warmed if necessary), the dried fruits and nuts mix and dust with icing sugar.
