These Chocolate Berry Overnight Oats are thick, creamy and full of good-for-you ingredients. Chocolate oats layered with berry jam, yoghurt and a thick chocolate shall, these are a great make-ahead vegan and gluten-free breakfast.
Overnight oats are always a good idea and every time I make them, I thank myself for stirring together all the ingredients the night before. It really is the best way to look after your future self. These oats are the best of both worlds as they are rich and chocolatey but light and fruity plus the “magic” chocolate shell makes the oats a really fun start to the day.

If you are excited for these oats, skip ahead to the recipe card, but let’s first discuss the ingredients a little more.
What ingredients go into these oats?
The base of the overnight oats is simple but tastes like dessert:
Oats: gluten-free where needed.
Chia seeds: this adds a boost of extra goodness and it helps to thicken the oats, too. you can also use ground flaxseed, if you prefer.
Cocoa powder: or cacao powder makes these oats rich and chocolatey.
Dairy-free yoghurt: for the creamiest oats, use thick yoghurt like coconut or dairy-free Greek-style yoghurt, but any will do. Choose a natural or vanilla flavoured one for the best oats.
Plant-based milk: any milk will work in these oats and I like oat or almond but coconut, pea or soya will also be great.
Now onto the layers:
Extra yoghurt: as above, use a thick dairy-free yoghurt.
Berry jam: you can use a homemade one or shop-bought jam. I used a lovely raspberry one for the layers but blueberry, cherry or strawberry would also be delicious.
Berries: or any fruit that you like to top the oats.
Chocolate: for the chocolate shell on top. I used a delicious dark raspberry chocolate here but any dairy-free chocolate will work.
Coconut oil: this makes the chocolate on top shinier and a smoother, creamier texture. It is not strictly essential so you can skip this part.
How do I make these creamy chocolate oats?
Like regular overnight oats, all the work happens overnight in the fridge, watch the video here:
Sir together all the oat ingredients: and leave to soak and thicken overnight in the fridge in a sealed container or jar.
Have two glasses or bowls ready: and layer up the oats with the yoghurt and berry jam.
Melt the chocolate and coconut oil: and pour over the top. Allow the chocolate to set.
Grab a spoon and crack the shell: and dig into the oats.
Are these gluten-free and nut-free?
Yes these breakfast pots are naturally gluten-free, just check that your oats are certified gluten-free where needed. The oats are also nut-free, just make sure that your milk, yoghurt and chocolate are all nut-free.
How long will these Chocolate Berry Overnight Oats last?
These pots are great to prepare at the weekend and you can increase the recipe to make 4 or even 6 portions for the week ahead. Once the base mix is ready, you can keep it in the fridge in a sealed container for up to 3-5 days.
