Chocolate Orange Blended Oats (Vegan Gluten-Free)

These Chocolate Orange Blended Oats are an easy, delicious and healthy breakfast that is ready in 10 minutes. Layer up blended chocolate and orange oats with blood orange wedges and top with a thick chocolate shell.

I am in love with chocolate shell oats right now, that is, oar jars topped with a layer of chocolate that sets like a “magic shell” and that you can crack into! It reminds me of the chocolate sauce for ice cream that formed a crackled chocolate shell as it set… it is just as magical today.

What ingredients do I need?

The base for these oats are simple:

  • Oats: the obvious ingredient. Make sure your oats are gluten-free where needed.
  • Boiling water: leave the oats to sit in boiling water for 5 minutes to swell up and become plump and soft.
  • Banana or applesauce: this adds moisture and sweetness to the oats. I prefer banana but I know some people don’t love banana as much so applesauce will also be great.
  • Chia seeds: to help thicken the oats and add a dose of goodness. You could also use flaxseeds.
  • Yoghurt: for the chocolate portion of the oats you will use chocolate yoghurt, or you can use plain yoghurt with 1 tbsp cocoa or cacao powder and for the plain orange oats, you will use plain yoghurt. I like thick coconut or other dairy-free yoghurt. The thicker the better for the creamiest oats.
  • Plant-based milk: use you favourite milk like coconut, oat, almond or soya.
  • Maple syrup: for a little sweetness. You can skip this if you like but it does make the oats taste better in my opinion. Other syrups like date, agave, coconut or vegan honey will also work here.
  • Orange zest: as blood oranges are in season I love to use them here but all oranges and types will work. The zest packs in so much flavour to these Chocolate Orange Blended Oats.
  • Dark chocolate: I prefer dark chocolate for my chocolate shell but any dairy-free chocolate will work.
  • Coconut oil: this makes the chocolate shell shinier and results in a better crack but it is not essential.

How do I make these oats?

Like my other blended oat jars, the method relies on a few steps:

  • Soak the oats in boiling water: this softens then to make the plump and quickly cooks them.
  • Make the chocolate orange oats: add all of the ingredients to a bowl and then blend this mix until smooth.
  • Make the plain orange oats: add all of the plain orange oat ingredients and then blend until creamy.
  • Layer up the oats in two jars: you can make them as fancy or as simple as you like.
  • Melt the chocolate and coconut oil: the coconut oil helps the chocolate set shinier and with a better crack.
  • Allow the chocolate to set: in the fridge.
  • Grab a spoon and crack into these oats: and enjoy.

Are these oats gluten-free and nut-free?

Yes these are gluten-free, just check that your oats are certified gluten-free. As for being nut-free, just check that your yoghurt, milk and chocolate do not contain nuts.
