What ingredients do I need?
You can see the ingredients with weights in the recipe card below and see my favourite and recommended products in the “shop the recipe” section.
Coconut oil: to allow the chocolate to be thinner and more glossy for dipping in the apple.
Crushed nuts: I went for crushed almonds but you can use any, or try desiccated coconut, cacao nubs and freeze-dried berries.

Are these gluten-free and nut-free?
These are naturally gluten-free as long as your granola butter is GF. Or, use peanut, cashew or almond butter. If you are using granola butter it should be nut-free, but check the labels, or use sunflower seed butter. Also swap the crushed nuts for cacao nibs, desiccated coconut or freeze-dried berries.
How do I make them?
These are ready in a few steps:
Wash and dry the apple: so that it’s ready to go.
De stone the dates and lay out on some parchment: so they all touch each other.
Roll them out so they are flat: between a second sheet of parchment.
Spread the dates with the granola or nut butter: leaving a small edge.
Place the apple in the middle and fold the dates up: to entirely cover the apples.
Work firmly with your hands: and wrap up in the parchment.
Pop in the fridge for an hour: to set.
Melt the chocolate and place in a bowl: so you can dip in the apple.
Place a chopstick inside the apple: so you can lift it up.
Dip the apple into the chocolate: and allow the excess to drip off.
Cover with crushed nuts: and enjoy.

These Viral Date Chocolate Apples are a fun spin on the classic toffee apple for bonfire night. They have a hidden layer of granola or nut butter, a thick layer of squishy dates and a thick chocolate coating all around an apple.
Ingredients
1 large apple
9-12 medjool dates, pitted
2-3 tbsp thick peanut or granola butter
80g dark chocolate, chopped small
2 tsp coconut oil
1 tbsp chopped almonds or peanuts
Instructions
Wash and dry the apple.
De-stone the dates and place on a piece of parchment into a square, so they all touch each other. Place a second piece of parchment over the top and use a rolling pin to squish them down.
Spread over the peanut/granola butter, leaving a small edge.
Place the apple in the middle and then use the parchment paper to help you wrap dates around the apple. Work with firm hands, pressing it all together so its compact, and it will cover it all. Make sure it’s wrapped tightly and place in the fridge for 1 hour (or longer).
Add the chocolate and coconut oil to a heatproof bowl and melt over a pan of simmering water until glossy.
Unwrap the apple and insert a chopstick (or similar) into the middle of the apple (where the core is) and then dip into the chocolate. Use a spoon to help cover the entire apple with the chocolate. Allow the excess to drip off and place on a piece of parchment.
While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle over the chopped nuts.
Allow to set for 10 minutes and then slice to enjoy.
Keep in the fridge for 5-7 days.
